Geum urbanum (Avens)

Avens were associated with Christianity because the leaves grow in threes and the petals in fives (reminiscent of, respectively, the Holy Trinity and the Five Wounds). Wood avens is an astringent herb and is used principally to treat problems affecting the mouth, throat, and gastrointestinal tract. An infusion is taken internally in the treatment of diarrhea, intestinal disorders, stomach upsets, irritable bowel syndrome, and liver disorders.
