Asclepias speciosa (Showy milkweed)

Traditionally used as a food plant. The sap is left to harden and chewed, while the pods and young leaves can be eaten or added to soups. Native species attracts pollinators to the garden. Asclepias speciosa is a deer-proof perennial particularly loved by Monarch butterflies and pollinators of all kinds. It does best in containers as it can spread aggressively. The stems can make ropes, basketry, and nets while the latex was used to cure warts and other ailments.
